The Fluids in Your Fleet Vehicles

It’s important to know the fluids in your fleet vehicles so you can determine what is leaking out of them should they spring leaks. Buellton Garage is going to list the common fluids found in all automobiles by their color below. Color is what helps you identify the fluid, as does from where it is leaking.

Blue

Blue fluid leaking from underneath the engine is most likely the fleet vehicle’s windshield washing solution. This fluid can leak out of the hoses or the reservoir. If the fluid is leaking from the front of the engine, it could also be the fleet vehicle’s antifreeze/coolant if that is blue.

Brown

Brown fluid leaking from behind the wheels is brake fluid or differential oil. If you have brown fluid leaking from underneath the engine, it is most likely motor oil. Brown fluid leaking from the center of the automobile is transmission fluid that has changed color due to age.

Clear

Clear fluid that has no odor and is leaking from underneath the engine is most likely condensation from the fleet vehicle’s air conditioner. You may also end up with condensation leaking out of the tailpipe. The only other clear fluid in your fleet vehicle is fuel, so make sure to smell the fluid.

Green

Green or blue-green fluid is antifreeze/coolant. It normally leaks from the front of the engine out of the water pump, radiator hoses, or the radiator itself. If the latter occurs, the fluid may also have an orange tint to it because it is filled with rust found in the bottom of the radiator.

Pink

Pink fluid leaking from underneath the vehicle toward the center is never a good sign. This is an indication that the fleet vehicle has a breach between the cooling system and the transmission and, consequently, the transmission oil is being diluted by engine coolant.

Red

Your fleet vehicles’ power steering systems use red fluid. The transmissions use red fluid, as well. Other automotive fluids that are sometimes red include brake fluid and engine coolant. Red is a common color, so your fleet vehicles might have multiple fluids that are red in them.

Yellow

Finally, yellow, neon yellow, or yellow-green fluid is most likely antifreeze/coolant. It’s not a good idea to keep your fleet vehicles on the road if they are leaking coolant as the engines will overheat and be damaged by the excess heat.
