Alternator Problems Can Dim Your Headlights

If you have noticed that your headlights seem dimmer than normal, it could be that the alternator is dying. Buellton Garage advises that the factory-installed alternator will last about 10 years before it goes bad. Once it does, you will have vehicle light problems and some of the other problems listed below.

Cranking Starts/Dead Battery

It may also be difficult if not impossible to get your vehicle started because the alternator can no longer charge the battery. This is part of what the alternator does; it charges the battery. As the battery discharges, the alternator charges it so you can count on your automobile to start and run.

Dashboard Warning Light

You may also end up with a warning light on your vehicle’s dashboard that points to a problem with the alternator. Specifically, the light may spell ALT or be in the shape of a battery. This is an indication that the alternator is going bad and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

Frequent Engine Stalling

Frequent engine stalling is also a sign that the alternator is going bad. You may not know this, but the alternator provides power to the spark plugs. This allows the spark plugs to generate sparks in the cylinders. If your engine is misfiring and stalling, the spark plugs may not be getting the power they need.

Malfunctioning Accessories

You may also start to have problems with your vehicle’s power accessories if the alternator is malfunctioning. For example, you may end up with slow power seats and windows. You may also have problems with your entertainment and navigation systems among other accessories.

Overheated Electrical System

If your electrical system is overheating, the alternator is faulty and producing too much power. Ideally, the alternator should not produce more than 14.5 volts when it generates power. If it generates too much power because it is malfunctioning, it will overheat your automobile’s electrical system.

Strange Noises in the Engine

Finally, you may hear strange noises coming from the engine if the alternator is going bad. For example, if you hear growling or grinding sounds, the alternator itself may be wearing down. The alternator belt can also make noises such as squealing or whining if it is too loose.
